Unilin Technologies launches Pressed Bevel for resilient flooring


Unilin Technologies introduces its patented Pressed Bevel Technology for resilient flooring to its continuously growing licensing base. With this technology, the edges of a resilient flooring panel are pressed downwards into a bevel, making sure the decor layer and texture of the board continue until the deepest point of the bevel. This unique technology, on which Unilin Technologies already started filing patents more than 10 years ago,  enhances the appearance of resilient flooring to be even closer to real wood than ever before.

A first - This club building with circular facade was built with Facadeclick


The very first facade with the circular Facadeclick in the Netherlands is a fact! And you can find it in Leudal, Limburg. The ultimate sustainable club building was designed by Piet Laumans of Engelman Architecten. For the facade, they chose the circular facade system Facadeclick. ‘As architects, we create work that will still be here in 10 years. For this, we have a social responsibility.’ Piet Laumans, Engelman Architecten.

The brand new building of the new soccer club is located in a rural area near Kelpen-Oler. The design is of solid wood and the facade had to have a robust appearance. Piet came to Aberson with exactly that question: 'We wanted to protect the wood and the material had to be circular. Together with Aberson, we looked for the right product and we ended up with Facadeclick, a dry assembly system. It's simple but elegant. It is robust and low-tech. Facadeclick is a system that everyone understands. And that just suits this building.

What is Facadeclick?

Facadeclick is a dry assembly system that originated in Belgium. It consists of hand-shaped facade bricks from Nelissen that you click together with connectors, as if they were LEGO. According to the manufacturer, even a do-it-yourselfer could get started with it.


Circular building against shortages

Engelman Architecten has been working for years with materials that have a long lifespan and are preferably sustainable as well. Piet: 'Why? Because we foresee material shortages getting worse. During the COVID-19 crisis, for example, you already noticed the shortage of wood. Circularity is a fantastic solution to that. If you work with mortar or glue, then you lose the circularity. In this case, you stack Facadeclick dry, so you can take it apart in no time. When we presented the material to our client, the municipality, they also saw its simplicity and elegance. And so we took on this project.'

'The whole building is actually designed with two materials: solid wood and Facadeclick. Where necessary, Facadeclick protects the wood. And we deploy it as an architectural tool.'

Beauty is on the inside and on the outside

Because of the water level, the club building stands in a concrete container and consists of a solid wooden structure. ‘What we actually did with that is store CO2 in the building again. The solid wood is strong, but vulnerable to wind and weather. The application with Facadeclick protects the wood in a beautiful but robust way. That was important to us. After all, it is a canteen building, and sometimes a ball hits it.’

But the architect went a step further. ‘What I like is that we have extended the stones inside. In the canteen for example, a place that is used intensively. And if things do get a bit cozy, the solid wood is well protected. I am pleased that we were able to visibly show the fantastic solid wood construction as much as possible. That gives the whole a certain architectural look.

The tolerance of tolerances

Even though it seems simple, as with all building projects there were also challenges. Piet: ‘The biggest challenge was in the differences between the tolerances of wood and ceramics. When you think about the effect of wood you think in millimeters, but with ceramics you're sometimes dealing with centimeters. That's a big difference to overcome. What also plays a role is that it is a Belgian system. Whereas in the Netherlands we first install the window frames and then the rest, in Belgium it's the other way around. Together with the contractor and Aberson, we took a good look at the implementation. The people from Facadeclick also provided support on the building site.’

Solution for the future

Piet is pleased that they were able to keep the product pure: 'I think that's perhaps the best part. We did not have to use a lot of tricks. The combination of materials remains super and I still believe it is a logical way of combining materials.’ ‘I am convinced that we will use these kinds of materials much more in the future. You could just screw this building apart in 30 years. Suppose you took the masonry off, and then you could sell it for 20% of its original value. Then you literally have residual value. I really believe in a system like that.'
